The Brief

Frontline is an online music magazine and mentorship programme with a mission to amplify the voices of young journalists in the UK’s music scene. However this particular challenge existed firmly in the real world – the design and print of a physical annual magazine.

Our Approach

Our goal was to create a clean, cohesive visual language that mirrored the magazine’s online presence and tied each edition together on shelf. We worked with Frontline to establish unique themes for each issue, making not magazines, but collectible pieces of art.

Our Thinking

We designed layouts and visual devices to accentuate featured artists and ensure their young voices weren't just heard, but at the heart of the conversation. We even supported print management, overseeing the production of over 3,000 copies.

Design Process

001 The Breakthrough Issue: The inaugural edition led with high-contrast editorial design, borrowing from Frontline’s online visual language and colour palette. Special accents, such as handwritten quotes and highlighted text, were integrated to represent the moments of inspiration and bookmarking that lead to creative breakthroughs.

Issue 002 The Declaration Issue: The second issue was all about artistic declarations – how creative vision and intention merge with ingenuity to create something totally original. We maintained the core visual language from Issue 1, but amplified it with bold typography and full-bleed photography. Themed elements – like the use of permanent marker to symbolise the indelible marks young artists are making on the industry – helped us to create an impactful, declarative impression from the very first page.
